IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, DC, January 8- Female Amateur boxers will showcase high energy fights in the “The Road to London” Series on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Women in Support Together (W.I.S.T.) will also be hosting another Coat Drive. Attendees are encouraged to bring their new or gently used coat and deposit them in the “Knock Out” drop box. All coats collected during the drive will be donated and distributed to men, women and children at homeless shelters, and centers for battered women across the New Jersey metropolitan area.

“The Road to London” series is our signature events; however W.I.S.T.’s goals are to direct their attention to the many needs of our community. With temperatures getting colder everyday and more people without constant shelter, we are delighted to be able to assist as many as we can,” comments Wanda Bruce, President of Women in Support Together.

The Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Women in Support Together, (W.I.S.T) is a pioneer in the field of sports and entertainment promotions in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Ms. Bruce established W.I.S.T based on her early vision of encouraging women to realize and achieve the goals of empowerment through the collective strength and efforts of female togetherness.

Wanda Bruce is one of the few women in the tough business of professional boxing and has been interested in boxing for the past 25 years. “A Ring of Their Own”, was the only All Female Boxing Series in the industry from 2005 – 2008, in which she was the “Matchmaker”. Wanda has worked assiduously putting together great women’s matches. For three years she made it possible for the group to become, Promoters of the year. Wanda certainly knows the boxing business inside and outside the ropes. In May 2003, she also promoted the first All Female Boxing event in Washington, DC, which was a great success.

She served as an Inspector on the local Boxing and Wrestling Commission, is a licensed promoter and is working diligently to establish women in a prominent way in all phases of professional boxing.

William McLaughlin in conjunction with Trenton Housing Authority will be the hosting facility and the event will include light dinner and many exciting bouts featuring boxers from the New Jersey and surrounding areas. There will be a scholarship fund started for Pamela Leonard, a student 13 years old killed in a drive by on behalf of the Trenton Pal Team Hope and in conjunction with Women In Support Together, overseen by Greater Donnelly Neighborhood Initiative.

The past three “The Road to London” events were held in Ft. Washington, MD in June, August and October 2009 and was a huge success with the attendance well over 450 screaming fans. Anyone who attended will tell you the fights were some of the best entertainment in the area. The Washington Post, Gazette, News Channel 4, 5, 8 and 9 has all covered the all female amateur boxing series.

We will be making a donation to Passionately Pink Breast Cancer Society. W.I.S.T. is all about helping female boxers and helping them with life in general.

This show is sanctioned by New Jersey LBC Association, USA Boxing. Doors open at 5pm with the first Bout at 6pm. Tickets are on sale now and priced at $25 for VIP, $20 Floor seating and $15 for general admission.

CONGRATULATIONS TO "TYRIESHIA DOUGLAS"

W.I.S.T. would like to extend a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the
2009 National PAL Champion "Tyrieshia Donnetta Douglas"
..... Trying to make her way to the 2012 Womens' Boxing Team

Oct 19, 2009

**PRESS** NEWS CHANNEL 9 Interview .....
Local Boxer Overcomes Tough Past, Eyes 2012 Olympics

Oxon, Hill, Md. (WUSA)--When she steps into the ring, Tyrieshia Douglas transforms.

"When I throw the first punch it's done, the monster just comes out of me," says the boxer from Southeast D.C.

Douglas has fast hands and big dreams, specifically the London Olympics in 2012 which will include women's boxing for the first time since 1904.

"The Olympic team is looking for the best, and she's one of the best," says her coach Calvin Ford. "The only thing she has to do is show them and she's going to do that."

Her three brothers introduced her to the sport, now she's trying to master it. At a recent event held by promoter Wanda Bruce she won the "fighter of the night" award stopping Quishana Fowler in three rounds.

"She is very skillful," says Bruce. "You wouldn't even know that she's 114 pounds, she's very powerful."

Douglas trains at Uptown Boxing Center in Baltimore, but to get a true idea of what she's really all about you have to go back a tumultuous childhood in Southeast.

"Nobody else was there for us in our family," says Douglas. "They used to say I was gonna have babies or be a crackhead or one of my brothers was gonna be dead."

Douglas and her siblings grew up in the foster care system, their mom and dad struggled with addictions.

"My mother was in the streets, my dad was in the streets, my grandmother, our whole family either using or selling drugs," says Douglas' brother Dewon.

So Dewon had to grow up fast and become father and mother.

"I have a father but he was our father, he had to do some crazy things for us to eat," says Tyrieshia.

And because of that a brother-sister bond has been formed that to this day is unbreakable.

"I get the sense of joy from watching her like a father would watching his son or a mother watching her daughter," says her brother.

And they both hope the U.S. Olympic team realizes she's the woman they want for 2012.

Moten, Redd Lead Parade of Beltway Winners at All-Female Card!

Sheri Moten of Old School Boxing and Tracey Redd of Sugar Ray Leonard Center were among the big Beltway winners at the second "Road To London" all-female boxing card tonight in front of a packed house at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.

Moten, competing in the 142-pound division, was named the Boxer of the Night for her victory over Raushana Thompson of Fast Lane Boxing Club of Philadelphia, PA. The 136-pound Redd received the award for the Knockout of the Night as she dropped Kendall Rice of In Motion Boxing Club of Midlothian, VA twice with hard right hands en route to a RSC-2 stoppage.

In the feature bout of the evening, Jennifer Wolfe, the daughter of eight-time world professional champion Ann Wolfe, won by decision over Upton Boxing's Shardae Powell in a 140-pound division bout. Ann Wolfe was in attendance and worked her daughter's corner.

The co-feature bout saw Lauran Fisher of the Indiana University (PA) collegiate boxing team win by decision over Old School's Kieona Barnes in a 118-pound bout.

Here are the results of other bouts on the card:

166 Pounds: Tori Nelson (Old School) RSC-2 over Tara Wood (Canino Boxing and Fitness, Dania Beach, FL.) Working Wood's corner was former world boxing, kickboxing and martial arts champion Bonnie Canino.

Heavyweight: Dominique McGlotten (UMAR) dec. over Richetta McAiley (Fast Lane)

133 Pounds: Asia Stevenson (Headbangers) dec. over DaSha Ragland (Harrisburg Boxing Club, Harrisburg, PA). Stevenson is coming off winning a Junior Olympic title.

130 Pounds: Talanee Tillery (Keystone) dec. over Maddie Marshall (LA Boxing).

148 Pounds: Beth Bowman (Hillcrest) RSC-1 over Miriam Lasar (LA Boxing)

120 Pounds: Tyreisha Douglas (Upton Boxing) dec. over Gina D'Andrea (UMAR). This was the bout of the night--an extremely action-packed contest.

115 Pounds: Elizabeth Keller (New Town, PA) dec. over Marita Gumbs (Midtown Youth Academy)

141 Pounds: Jonisha Wright (Harrisburg) dec. over Melissa Reams (River City Boxing Club, Richmond, VA)

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS: A great night of amateur boxing in front of a nice-sized crowd. Many kudos to go around, but I wanted to highlight three.

1. Promoter Wanda Bruce seems to have found a winning formula for a nice program of cards. As one of the leading promotional and matchmaking names in the women's boxing world, Bruce's connections are invaluable to bring the Ann Wolfes and Bonnie Caninos of the world to these events. With the women now heading to the Olympics in 2012, this boxing series should grow steadily in importance because this will be a tremendous showcase for ladies to prepare for the London Games.

There also seems to be something special about having cards at Rosecroft Raceway. Every time boxing is there, big crowds seem to follow. Lisa Watts and her staff at Rosecroft are to be commended for their continued support of the Beltway Boxing scene.

2. For someone not named Brotman, Winter or Fried and definitely without their type of budget, event publicist Cha Ross-Estes put together one of the best public relations plans for a boxing card that I have seen in the almost 24 years that I have been covering boxing in this area. Ross-Estes set up numerous interviews on television, on the web and in newspapers. Both Channel 5 and News Channel 8 did interviews and features in the days leading up to the card and Channel 4 was in attendance taping tonight. There were a number of web show interviews with the likes of CD Brown (DC Urban Sports) and Talking Boxing with Billy C as well as features in the Washington Post, Washington Informer, District Chronicles, Southern Maryland News and other media. Knowing what a difficult sell boxing can be to the mainstream media in this area, I have to point out what a tremendous job Ross-Estes did!

3. There was tremendous unity among the officials working at ringside. Representatives of Potomac Valley and South Atlantic branches of USA Boxing based in DC and Maryland as well as the Virginia Association of USA Boxing worked together in what Don King would call "unity and solidarity" to make this event happen. It was great to see all of these great people in one location.

The next all-female card is slated back at Rosecroft on Saturday, October 24.

We flew in 8x World Champion "Ann Wolfe" for our "ALL FEMALE" AMATEUR BOXING SHOW

A Ring of One's Own
More Girls and Women Are Entering Ranks of Amateur Boxing
By Dagny Salas
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, August 15, 2009

Madison Marshall, boxed into a corner of the ring, was getting hit over and over again when her trainer, Jennifer Salinas, yelled, "Get back in the center, get back in the center!"

Breathing hard and with her ponytail bouncing, 14-year-old Maddie and her sparring partner were soon dancing around the ring again, trading punches. Earlier, her father, Tate Marshall, had a more urgent concern for the trainer: "Is she breathing?"

"Yeah," Salinas said.

Maddie was diagnosed with asthma last year before she started boxing, but her infrequent attacks haven't stopped her from training for her first amateur match.

Most days this summer, Maddie has gotten up at 5 a.m. in her Manassas home to train at one of the gyms that her father owns in Northern Virginia. The routine is always the same: Get her hands taped, slip on boxing gloves the size of her face and wait for Vaseline to be smeared on her cheeks and lips (it prevents cuts and helps punches slide off). In amateur boxing, the goal is to throw as many punches as possible. For girls, a fight is three 90-second rounds.

The punches come fast.

"You try not to get hit, but you always get hit," Maddie said. "It doesn't really hurt. It just makes you want to hit back harder."

Maddie is one of 36 competitors in all-female amateur boxing matches Saturday at Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George's County. District-based promoter Wanda Bruce, who organized the fights, said the event is an opportunity for young female boxers to gain ring experience for higher levels of competition.

Until this week, when the International Olympic Committee decided to include the sport in the 2012 games in London, boxing had been the only Summer Olympics sport without female representation.

Bruce is the only promoter organizing all-female fights in the Washington area, said Luke Runion, the athletes' representative for the Potomac Valley Association, a USA Boxing committee. Competitions typically feature nine or 10 bouts, but Bruce is offering 18 to accommodate demand.

"More all-women's shows are cropping up around country," Runion said.

The decision to include women's boxing in the Olympics is like a "dream come true," Bruce said. More women have been getting involved in the historically male-dominated sport in the past decade.

Last year, 1,661 amateur female boxers and 28,539 amateur male boxers were registered to compete, according to USA Boxing, the national governing body for amateur boxing. In the Washington region, about 941 male boxers and almost 50 female boxers were registered.

Bruce started her company after working for years on the pro circuit. She sees the sport as an outlet for girls and young women. "If you're taught boxing, its not just how to box," Bruce said. "You have to be disciplined, you have to have good grades and you have to understand that it's not just, 'I'm going to box and beat people up.' "

Growing up, Maddie was active in cheerleading, lacrosse and gymnastics. But she said she has gravitated toward boxing and is open to pursuing it long term.

Training is physically punishing, and Maddie is often too tired afterward to hang out with friends. Her father said the sport has made her more mature and better able to cope with teenage drama.

"She handles things more like a young woman rather like an adolescent," he said. "The little things that'd normally really bug her now roll off her shoulders."

The rise in women's amateur boxing can be credited to the increasingly mainstream appeal of the sport, said Christy Halbert, a longtime boxing coach and head of the Women's Task Force for USA Boxing. She said that about 100,000 women in the United States participate in some form of boxing, whether at a gym or competitive levels. When women began to compete in boxing in the United States in 1993, Halbert said, they were barred from training in gyms, and male coaches refused to train them.

"It's hard for girls to find other girls in their skill set," said Julie Goldsticker, a spokeswoman for USA Boxing. "The more opportunities you have in tournaments, the more likely you are to stay interested in the sport."

Kieona Barnes, 22, will also make her debut at Rosecroft on Saturday. She is a night security officer and trains early in the morning after her shift. She said she began boxing five years ago to relieve stress, and she has noticed another benefit.

"When I have a bad day and I see young girls not hanging out on streets, and we're all in the gym together doing something positive," Barnes said, "it makes me smile."

As a teen, Barnes said, she was often hot-headed and sometimes skipped school. Boxing, she said, is humbling.

"When I began to learn about the sport, I found out boxing is technique," Barnes said. "Fighting, you can do anything, but boxing, you learn you have to throw it right."

Women's boxing included on 2012 Olympics list

THE ROAD TO LONDON IS NOT JUST A DREAM!!

W.I.S.T. will be instrumental in helping these girls get to LONDON!

August 13th, 2009
Women’s boxing to be 2012 Olympic sport, IOC says

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) — Women’s boxing will be included in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the president of the International Olympic Committee announced Thursday.

The decision came during a two-day IOC Executive Board meeting here, at which board members also decided to propose golf and rugby for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games.

“I can only rejoice about the decision of inclusion of women’s boxing,” IOC President Jacques Rogge told reporters. “I think it’s a great decision. Boxing was the sole (Olympic) sport with no women involved.”

He added, “The sport of women’s boxing has progressed a lot, a tremendous amount, in the last five years and it was about time to include them in the Games.”

When the IOC dropped baseball and softball from the 2012 Olympic program several years ago, it said it would consider adding new sports that had a clean reputation and a wide appeal.

Rogge pointed out that women’s boxing has around 200 athletes who could potentially compete in 2012, while softball has only around 120. As a result, he said, the IOC considered women’s boxing to be more popular.

Softball and baseball were considered for inclusion in the 2016 Games along with squash, karate, roller sports, golf, and rugby, but the board decided to consider only the last two.

The IOC has not yet picked the host city for 2016.

Board members will submit golf and rugby to the full IOC session for a final decision at its meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, in October.

Best knockout
Waldorf resident Nelson becomes successful boxer
Friday, July 10, 2009

Tori Nelson, left, spars with trainer Greg Flabager at Old School Gym. Nelson and Flabager have been training together for three years.

Waldorf's Tori Nelson is surprising everyone except her trainer Greg Flabager. He knew when he met her that she had what it takes to become a successful boxer.

Inspired by her husband, Nelson said if she were to start this venture that she wanted to do it right. Becoming pro is the one and only goal. Hard work and determination is paying off for her to obtain that goal.

Nelson has been training with Flabager for three years and he knows she will take her skill far.

"She's a humble fighter," Flabager said. "She's a devout Christian and she has the determination and the mindset to take her skill far."

Nelson only spars with men and finding a woman to fight in her weight class is often hard. She fought on June 6 at 164 pounds and, on June 20, she fought at 172 pounds.

"It's really hard to find fights," Nelson said. "And I spar with men because it makes my speed faster. Most women just can't move that quick and Greg works me hard."

Flabager doesn't hold anything back.

He gives Nelson his hardest hit and the eagle eye determination that she needs looking back at her.

"Her goal is to become pro," Flabager said. "She said that from the beginning."

Nelson is the proud mother of two children and she thinks of them each time she steps in the ring.

"They are my heart," she said.

The road to London 2012 Summer Olympics bout card on June 20 had Nelson (5-0) facing Cara Vargas of Arlington, Va.

Nelson gave Vargas a blow to the face in Round 1 and connected again in Round 2. Vargas was no match for Nelson. Nelson's quick arms and powerful jabs to the body wore out Vargas.

Nelson was awarded the best knockout of the night.

"When I saw the blood, I knew it was over," Nelson said.

Wanda Bruce, boxing promoter, founder, president and chief executive officer of Women in Support Together said, "She's improved since I last saw her. It was exactly what I anticipated. The outcome was well-wished for and to be able to host this event and have people from all over the country come here was a wonderful feeling."

Sanction holder Buddy Harrison said, "She's the nicest person in the world, but when she gets in the ring she turns into a pit bull. This was our first-ever all-female, I give it an 8 –– the next one will be better."

Prior to the fight against Vargas, Nelson beat Kaelon Hollon of Tony's Gym at the Washington Convention Center.

Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington will be the site for more upcoming amateur Female fights.

On Aug. 15, the "Road to London" series will continue and Nelson will be fighting once again. Her opponent is not known at this time.

"This is giving them a place to spotlight their talent," Bruce said. "And it's a wonderful opportunity for the community to see female amateurs in action. Part of the proceeds for the ‘Road to London' show will go to help the Diabetes Association of Maryland."

"Female amateurs are bigger and better than it's ever been," Bruce added.

The Olympics committee is keeping an eye on this sanction and these talented female fighters.

USA boxing representative Allan Nader was present for the fight and was eager to pass on the positive results, according to Bruce.

Guests included actor and singer Betty Entzminger, who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," and Bad Boy recording artist DeAngelo Redman entertained the audience.

COME MEET 8x World Champion "ANN WOLFE"
Ann will be our Special Guest on AUGUST 15, 2009

Ann Wolfe Biography

Ann Wolfe (born January 17, 1971) is a female boxer who holds 8 world titles, four different weight classes simultaneously. Wolfe is regarded by many within the sport as the hardest puncher in women's boxing.

Ann made her professional debut by beating Brenda Lee Bell by a four round decision. Her first loss came four fights later, when she was knocked out in three rounds by veteran and future world champion Valerie Mahfood. She beat Vienna Williams by a ten round decision to win her first world title, the IFBA Jr. Middleweight title. Ann beat Gina Nicholas by knockout in three to win the vacant WIBA Light Middleweight title. She then proceeded to beat Shirvelle Williams by knockout in one round on a non title bout. Next was the vacant IFBA world Super Middleweight title, which she picked up by knocking out Marsha Valley in six rounds. She and Valley fought again, this time with the vacant WIBC's version of the title, and Wolfe won by knockout in round ten. She avenged her defeat against Mahfood by taking the NABA world Super Middleweight title from her with a ten round decision.

On May 8, 2004, she surpassed Henry Armstrong's record of three world titles at the same time in different weight classes, by gaining the IBA world Light Heavyweight championship, knocking out the defending champion, former NCAA basketball star Vonda Ward, at one minute and 8 seconds of round one. Ward was taken to the hospital in serious condition due to damage to her neck and head she recuperated. Television commentators, including former world Lightweight champion Sean O' Grady, called this "the greatest knockout in women boxing's history". Wolfe retained her title in a rematch with Valley, by a sixth round knockout. On July 19,2005, Wolfe defeated Monica Nunez by a seventh round knockout in Lula, Mississippi. On August 20, she defeated Valerie Mahfood by a ten round decision.

Ann Wolfe's record stands at 24 wins and 1 loss, with 16 wins by knockout.

MEET THE PRESIDENT- Wanda Bruce

MEET THE PRESIDENT

The Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Women in Support Together, (W.I.S.T) is a pioneer in the field of sports and entertainment promotions in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Ms. Bruce established W.I.S.T based on her early vision of encouraging women to realize and achieve the goals of empowerment through the collective strength and efforts of female togetherness.

Her initial experiences as an entrepreneur in the areas of fashion design and cosmetology led to an early interest in the entertainment field, encouraged by her clientele, many of whom were entertainers or in some manner involved in show business. This interest meshed naturally with her early interests in sports, as an athlete and cheerleader during her school years.

Ms. Bruce’s vision for W.I.S.T is to open doors and widening vistas for women of all cultures. Recognizing that Sports and Entertainment promotions are areas where female leadership is vastly under served: Ms. Bruce is leading the effort for greater participation of females. W.I.S.T will accomplish these goals through the strategic combination of personal appearances, outreach, fundraisers, mentoring and personal counseling.

Wanda Bruce is one of few women in the tough business of professional boxing and has been interested in boxing for over 25 years. “A Ring of Their Own”, was the only All Female Boxing Series in the industry from 2005 – 2008, in which she was the “Matchmaker”. Wanda worked assiduously putting together great women’s matches. For three years she made it possible for the group to become, Promoters of the years. This lady knows the boxing business inside and outside the ropes.

Much of her inspiration in the sports came from the great legends in boxing, Don King, Buddy McGirt, Arnie Rosenthal, Jimmy Lang, Lu Duva, Jd Brown, Roy Jones and many more. In May 2003, she promoted the first All Female Boxing event in Washington, DC, which was a great success.

To that end she serves as an Inspector on the local Boxing and Wrestling Commission, is a licensed promoter and is working diligently to establish women in a prominent way in all phases of professional boxing.

Wanda Bruce is a dedicated professional an entirely focused on the establishment of a Female owned and operated business venture providing opportunities to women everywhere.

Olympic Inclusion Update

by Suzanne Grassel / May 15, 2009

by Christy Halbert

The International Federation for Boxing (AIBA) has officially submitted its proposal for women's Olympic inclusion to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The AIBA proposal for 2012 specifies five women's weight classes and 10 men's weight classes: the five women's weights range from 47kg to 75kg. The proposal also specifies the participation of 40 women boxers as opposed to 246 men.

The IOC's Programme Commission (PC) is in the process of reviewing the AIBA proposal. Once the review is completed, the Programme Commission can either accept it, or ask AIBA to amend its proposal. Once the PC and AIBA have finalized it, the final proposal will be submitted to the IOC Executive Commission (IOC EC) for their vote.

The IOC EC vote is expected to take place at one of two upcoming IOC meetings scheduled for mid-August and early October. By mid-October, the 2012 Olympic Game Program will be determined.

The upcoming vote has the potential of becoming a milestone in the Olympic sports movement. All other Olympic sports include female athletes. In 2004 and 2008, boxing was the only sport without women's participation. It is possible that the 2012 Olympic Games will mark the first-ever Olympics with all 26 sports including female athletes.

The upcoming vote, then, is an opportunity for the IOC to send a message to all International Federations (IF), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and National Governing Bodies (NGBs), that female athletes are valued and a valuable part of the Olympic movement. It will serve as a reminder to the world that the IOC supports the participation of all qualified athletes regardless of gender.

Further, support by the IOC means that more financial support will come from IFs, NOCs, and NGBs. (In the United States, these organizations are AIBA, the US Olympic Committee (USOC), and USA Boxing, Inc.) Olympic inclusion represents a beginning to the end of institutionalized bias.

The IOC can lead the way in showing its strong support for women athletes. The upcoming vote will no doubt bring attention to the international women's sports movement. Boxing represents the most traditionally "masculine" of all sports, and women boxers have worked for more than 100 years to break the barrier of participation. Boxing carries significance for all female athletes.

Finally, the upcoming vote can be a boon to Olympic-style boxing. The addition of female boxers will bring new possibilities, new heroes, renewed viewership interest, and new marketing opportunities for the sport.

If the IOC votes in favor of five women's events for 2012, the IOC takes a strong step toward offering all boxers the dream of participating in the Olympics, sends a strong message that they value women's inclusion, and makes great strides toward a truly inclusive Olympic Games.

ALL FEMALE AMATEUR BOXING
June 20, 2009 @ Rosecroft Raceway

:::: MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT::::

My goal is to help women with their boxing skills become widely recognized. Women involved in male dominant sports have always struck controversy. Without boxing greats like Muhammad Ali there would be no Laila Ali and without Joe Frazier there wouldn't have been a Jacqui Frazier-Lyde. So, not to be confused, I respect men's boxing greatly; but like the saying goes, behind every strong man stands a strong woman.
